HA HA. VERY PUNNY.

My love for a good pun will never die.  I can’t get enough of hearing the groans people make after you say a clever pun, it truly is priceless.  Sometimes puns could be so bad/good they can hurt.
South African graphic designer and illustrator Jaco Haasbroek puns beautifully.  He has a great sense of humor and illustrates it perfectly.  His witty humor and adorable characters will surely put a smile on any face.

Here’s an illustration that Ron Swanson would appreciate.

MIXED MEDIA PERFECTED.

Playing with a few tortilla chips could lead to some creative work if you just stop and look at the potential of the tortilla chip.  Artist Javier Pérez Estrella aka cintascotch is a graphic designer from Ecuador and his work is simple and imaginative.  He plays with two and three dimensions in a way we haven’t seen before.  As humans we tend to see faces and shapes in inanimate objects.  His work takes this thought to the next level.

The illustrations are simple and compliment the found item perfectly.  He is using mixed media just the way God intended mixed media to be.  If you check out his Instagram or his website he has some pretty remarkable ‘stop motion’ animation videos up.

FOOD HAVE FEELINGS TOO YOU KNOW!

Playing around with clay is super fun.  When I was a little girl loved sculpting little tiny meals for my dolls.  Granted they never looked as good as the pre-made plastic foods that Mattel manufactured.  But for a girl that couldn’t afford the expensive stuff these tiny mediocre clay foods were acceptable for my Barbies. After college i began to experiment with polymer clay and created miniature food shaped earrings and charms and even got a chance to do the craft fair/flea market circuit.  I had a great time creating these tiny detailed pieces but it sure does take lots and lots of work.  I really appreciate how much effort goes into these sculpts.

Husband and wife team Liz and Jimmy Reed are Cuddles and Rage. This creative duo creates some pretty spectacular work. Whether its sculpting or drawing comics these two have an eye for the wacky and for the witty.  These little sculpted dioramas take up a life and story of their own.  The subtle expression on each characters faces are amazing.  I am still baffled by how they get that killer texture on the clay,  it’s really quite mind blowing.

This is how doughnuts get their sprinkles.

CAMPING FOOD.

There are many perks associated with camping.  Fresh air, connecting with nature, connecting with friends and family, hiking, stargazing and the best thing of all is eating camp food.  Nothing beats cooking a big meal after a long hike.  There’s something very special about the effort that goes into building a fire, chopping up the veggies, marinating the meat all while cracking a few cold beers under the trees.  Cooking a delicious meal in the middle of the wilderness is very special thing that lets us get in touch with our primitive selves.
IMG_2825

Meal times at camp could be the times where people connect the most.  Maybe because of the smell of the food, the collaborative help or just the general buzz of the vultures (your friends) taking bites of food as you try and cook a meal.  Tacos are always a welcome guest at campsites.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, especially when camping.  We all know waking up with the smell of bacon is the absolute best, add that to the smell of fresh air and a dash of campfire smell and we’ve got the holy trinity of smells. The best breakfast recommendation will always be breakfast burritos.  But when you’re in a rush a quick hard boiled egg and some snacks will do just fine.  Get in touch with mother nature, eat Lunchables…..mmm  delicious sodium.

A PROFOUND KAWAII.

The cutesy or “kawaii” style of art has always put a smile on my face.  I’m just a sucker for inanimate objects with dot eyes and mischievous smiles.

Malaysian artist Suah Wei Hong aka ‘Kuso Design‘ has been creating some amazing work.  Though they may look cute on the outside, these images are simple and profound.  They tell the life lessons of love, loss and family.  Yes, they have cute eyes but they still manage to evoke some strong emotions out of even the hardest heart.  I think the artist was smart using solid background colors to really showcase these characters.

A SOFTHEARTED NERD.

Illustrator Nan Lawson has a style that I can only describe as “sweetheart nerd”. Her pieces combine a soft and sweet quirky flair to recognizable pop culture figures. She has a unique style of portraiture and character busts.  What I love about her work is the cute way she draws characters with their eyes closed.  Its a  soft, peaceful and meditative feeling.  These characters come to life with the detailed line work and lovely use of color.

PLAY ON WORDS PLAY WITH MY HEART.

Greek artist and t-shirt designer Teo Zirinis is the clever mind behind HandsOffMyDinosaur!
His art has a great blend of puns, pop culture references and whimsy.
Whether its inanimate objects doing something silly, a play on words or your favorite character doing something out of character all of his work is great fun.

HEY NERD! EAT YOUR FRUITS AND VEGGIES!

Graphic designer Darkchoocoolat aka Florent Rousseau has been creating some super fun nerdy art.  8 bit fruits and veggies can brighten up my day.  Pop culture anything always sparks my interest.
You should probably eat five fruits and vegetables a day to be in good health.  Its easy when they look this delicious and adorable.

This health bar is super clever. Not a bad idea if you’d like to see some of your video game characters zombiefied. Something like this would be pretty useful in a game when you’ve died. Plus you gotta think that zombies have different character abilities. Sounds like a fun game to play if you ask me.

LET’S ROAST SOME BACON AROUND THE FIRE!

As a young child I would visit my family in Hungary.  There were certain traditions that we brought back home to America and still practice today.  Some of these traditions make more sense on a farm in rural Hungary but sometimes you gotta make due with whichever setting you’ve got. Plus some food traditions were just too delicious to leave back in the motherland. This pastime is best enjoyed in the countryside, camping or in your garden.
Szalona Sutes‘ or ‘Bacon Roasting‘ is a tradition that is best enjoyed with family and friends.
This is a Hungarian style BBQ!  So instead of one person standing in front of a hot flame cooking, you’ve got several people sweating it out.  This is really fun and builds a since of community.
Before the meal begins everyone enjoys  a shot of Palinka (Hungarian brandy) to celebrate the gathering.  Beers can also be consumed throughout the cookout. Highly recommended!  After all, its a barbecue.

Here’s what you need:
A fire and heavy sharpened sticks (or a long metal skewer will do for all you fancies out there).
7

Fresh cut veggies such as tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, onions and radishes.
2

Pork products such as pork belly or thick cut bacon (preferably with lots of fat), Hungarian smoked sausage and some nice smoked pork tenderloin.
11

Bread…preferably thick rustic french bread, shepherders bread or if you’re lucky then this delightful Hungarian style bread.
999

Put all your meats on the stick and it is rotated on the fire.  You gotta keep spinning or your fat will burn.  You want to make the bacon crispy not charred.
1

The key is to get the bacon drippings on your fresh bread and even let them drip on the veggies.   You’ll notice the bacon and sausage drippings will activate the flames as it drips into the embers.
6

You cant rush the bacon.   Give it some time.  While you wait and continually spin you can snack on your greased bread.
3

After you see you’ve crisped your bacon you can start chopping the cooked bits off.
99999

This is a great old-fashioned tradition that’s great fun with good people. There’s really nothing better than laughing at the one person that constantly keeps getting smoke in their eyes. Because we all know ‘smoke follows beauty’.

FAMOUS CHUNKIES.

I can easily say Who Framed Roger Rabbit is one of the greatest movies of all time. I mean whats more amazing than animated characters mingling with real life people?  I went crazy for it when I was a kid.  I still get pretty pumped when I see animation fuse with real life objects.
Artist Alex Solis does amazing illustrations that are unique, fun and playful.

He also is doing a series called Famous Chunkies. He illustrates recognizable pop culture figures as little fatties. I like the consistency of this series but it also has a strong message.
Usually when unhealthy eating is discussed it tends to come off as preachy and a little annoying. I think Alex Solis raises awareness without it being too much to digest….(see what I did there?)
Even though they are simply adorable, it gives you a little food for thought.  Some of these drawings make me think about cheeseburgers a little  more than usual.  Then it immediately makes me rethink eating that cheeseburger.
